Despite growing disappointment in his handling of immigration issues, Latino voters favor President Barack Obama by six-to-one over any of the Republican presidential hopefuls, showed a Fox News Latino poll conducted recently.

The national poll of likely Latino voters indicated that 73 percent of them approved of Obama’s performance in office, with over half those questioned looking favorably upon his handling of the healthcare debate and the economy, at 66 percent and 58 percent respectively.

Univision and Disney in Talks for an English-Language News Channel

The Walt Disney Company may join Univision, the dominant Spanish-language broadcaster in the United States, in starting an English-language cable news channel this year, people with knowledge of the talks between the companies said.

The plan would offer both networks access to the growing audience of English-speaking latinos in the United States. It would also give ABC News a prominent cable outlet. The new channel could combine the resources of Disney’s ABC News and Univision’s news division to rival established news entities like Fox News Channel, MSNBC and CNN according to a NY Times article. It would be aimed at English-speaking Hispanics in the United States, whose numbers are growing.

The demographics are favorable. The channel would be geared toward English-speaking latinos in the United States, whose numbers are growing. Many advertisers want more ways to reach latinos, and big media companies want to help.

The deal would give Univision an English-language foothold. The Spanish-language broadcasting giant wants to expand its footprint with English-language programming. First-generation latinos in the United States tend to watch shows in Spanish, but many second- and third-generation latinos gravitate toward shows in English.

Latinos Say They Have the Worst of a Bad Economy

A majority of Latinos (54%) believe that the economic downturn that began in 2007 has been harder on them than on other groups in the United States according to a Pew Hispanic Center survey.

Large shares report that they or someone in their household has been unemployed in the past year (59%); that their personal finances are in “only fair” or “poor” shape (75%); or that they are underwater on their mortgage (28% of Latino homeowners).

However, Latinos are more upbeat than others about the prospect for better days ahead according to the survey of Latino adults.

As Deportations Hit Record Highs, Latinos Oppose Obama’s Policy

By a ratio of more than two-to-one, Latinos disapprove of the way the Obama administration is handling deportations of unauthorized immigrants, according to a new national survey of Latino adults by the Pew Hispanic Center.

Deportations have reached record levels under President Obama, rising to an annual average of nearly 400,0001 since 2009, about 30% higher than the annual average during the second term of the Bush administration and about double the annual average during George W. Bush’s first term.

The survey also reveals that heading into the 2012 presidential campaign, Obama and the Democratic Party continue to enjoy strong support from Latino registered voters, despite a decline in Obama’s job approval rating.

Minnie Minoso Gets Another Shot at Baseball Hall of Fame

A special vote by a 16-member panel will give Minnie Minoso, known as the Jackie Robinson of Latin America, yet another chance at membership in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Minoso, who was a hard-hitting left fielder for the White Sox over 12 years in the 1950s and ’60s, played with a flashy exuberance that helped make him a seven-time All-Star and a fan favorite. But he never received more than 21 percent of the vote in 15 years on the baseball writers’ ballot, with 75 percent required for induction.

A “golden era” committee of Hall voters has been reconsidering the merits of Minoso, Ron Santo and six other bypassed player candidates, as well as two executives.

Cuban-Americans Take Lead in Building Ties With Cuba

Taking advantage of looser restrictions, younger Cuban-Americans who still have strong family ties to the island have been visiting and sending money with regularity according to a NY Times article.

Despite the United States’ commercial and economic embargo, imposed in 1960, ties between the two Cuban populations in South Florida and Cubans in Cuba began to shift slowly a decade ago and have intensified in the past two years, a result of the Obama administration’s move in 2009 to loosen travel and shipping restrictions. Recent decisions by the Cuban government allowing Cubans to own cellphones and computers, open small businesses and buy and sell cars and property have further solidified these ties.

But the biggest reason for the turnaround is the change in the profile of Cuban-Americans in South Florida. There are an estimated 300,000 Cuban-Americans in the United States who arrived after the mid-1990s, mostly through a special visa program. They now outnumber aging Cuban exiles from the 1960s.Unlike the exiles who fled Cuba in the 1960s and ’70s, losing property, family and their homeland, this younger generation’s web of immediate family members in Cuba is strong and wide.

Latino Poverty Rate Highest In Census Measure

For more than a decade, the Census Bureau has been developing an alternative measure of poverty that is intended to better reflect the costs of basic living expenses as well as the resources people have to pay them. The bureau has just released results for 2010 from the alternative metric—called the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM)—that uses a wider range of factors than the official federal measure to determine poverty status according to a Pew Hispanic Center report.

The additional data used in the alternative measure include medical expenses, tax credits, non-cash government benefits (such as food stamps, housing subsidies and school lunch programs) and cost-of-living adjustments for different geographic areas. The alternative measure is not intended to replace the official poverty measure, at least for now. For the foreseeable future, the Census Bureau will report two sets of numbers.

Telemundo Seeks Spanglish Speakers, Aiming for New Viewers

Telemundo is planning to show English-language subtitles in an effort to attract viewers among the skyrocketing number of second- and third-generation Hispanic-Americans according to a NY Times article.

Telemundo has long trailed its rival Univision in their competition for Hispanic television viewers in the United States. But as the number of second- and third-generation Hispanic-Americans skyrockets, the perennial runner-up is embracing a new strategy — English-language subtitles and Spanglish — to attract deep-pocketed viewers and the advertisers who covet them.

The new approach, reflecting the changing dynamics of Hispanics across the country, can be seen in the network debut of the Cuban-born television personality Cristina Saralegui as the host of a Sunday variety show, and in a crop of new telenovelas intended to reflect the sensibilities of acculturated Hispanics.

Childhood Poverty Among Latinos Sets Record

The spread of poverty across the United States that began at the onset of the Great Recession of 2007-2009 and accelerated last year hit one fast-growing demographic group especially hard: Latino children according to an analysis of new data from the U.S. Census Bureau by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center.

More Latino children are living in poverty—6.1 million in 2010—than children of any other racial or ethnic group. This marks the first time in U.S. history that the single largest group of poor children is not white. In 2010, 37.3% of poor children were Latino, 30.5% were white and 26.6% were black, according to an analysis of the data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Latino College Enrollment Rises

Hispanics in the U.S. registered significant gains in education, with college enrollment among young Hispanics up by 24 percent from 2009 to 2010, a new Pew Hispanic Center report shows.

The report, based on census data, shows that the rise in college enrollment among Hispanics ages 18 to 24 was the largest increase among all major ethnic and racial groups. From 2009 to 2010, the number of Hispanic young adults enrolled in college grew by 349,000, compared with an increase of 88,000 young blacks and 43,000 young Asian-Americans and a decrease of 320,000 young whites.

As a result of these shifts, young Hispanics for the first time outnumbered young blacks on campus, even though black college enrollment has also grown steadily for decades and it, too, has surged in recent years.

Wealth Gap Widens for Latinos

The wealth gap between latinos and whites has widened to unprecedented levels amid the housing crisis and the recession, according to an analysis of newly available 2009 government data by the Pew Research Center, an independent think tank. The median net worth of white households is twenty times greater than that of black households and 18 times greater than that of latino households, according to the study.

The study, which used data collected by the Census Bureau, found that the median wealth of latino households fell by 66 percent from 2005 to 2009. By contrast, the median wealth of whites fell by just 16 percent over the same period. Black Americans saw their wealth drop by 53 percent. The median wealth of latino and black households is at its lowest point since 1984, when the Census Bureau first conducted the study, the report said. Read the entire study here.

Robinson Cano 5th Dominican to win HR Derby

Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees became the fifth Dominican to win Major League Baseball's All-Star Home Run Derby joining Sammy Sosa (2000), Miguel Tejada (2004), Vladimir Guerrero (2007) and David Ortiz (2010). Cano's father, former major leaguer Jose Cano pitched to his son and helped him win the event.

Robinson hit 12 home runs in the final round to beat Adrian Gonzalez of the Boston Red Sox. Robinson drilled the winning shot over the fence in right-center field, lifted his arms in the air, and found his father, wrapping him in a bear hug in a touching moment.

"When he called me at home, that he wanted me to come to the United States because he's going to be in the Home Run Derby, I said, 'I'll be happy to pitch to you,' because that's what I do at home," Jose Cano said. Robinson Cano also became the third Yankee to win the Home Run Derby, after Tino Martinez in Cleveland in 1997 and Jason Giambi in Milwaukee in 2002.

“The best thing is not my swing, it’s the gentleman that was throwing B.P., my dad,” said Robinson. “I want to tell him he’s one of the best fathers, thank him for the support and making me who I am today.”

Comprised of a vast immigrant population, the United States matured and expanded as a result of the great Irish and Chinese immigrations of the 1800s along with many newcomers from Europe over the years. These immigrants provided much of the labor force that built the infrastructure as our country grew into a world power. Over the years, my family and millions of other immigrants worked hard to make America into a strong, productive, and dynamic nation.

Today, tens of thousands of young adults stand ready to give back to the country they call home.

Latinos, Voting, and Future Elections

As media and pundits continue to dissect the results of November's midterm election, one clear theme has emerged: Latinos in 2010 affirmed their influential role in American politics, as voters and as candidates, and this will only be magnified in the 2012 election. And while 2010 showed that political leaders and parties that demonize or take Latino voters for granted are taking a great risk, this election also showed that effective outreach to the Hispanic electorate continues to be spotty, both in terms of actual contact and in candidates defining themselves on the issues that matter.

Let's recap. Latino voters proved pivotal in several contested races, more notably in U.S. Senate contests in Nevada, Colorado, California, and Washington. They also made their mark in gubernatorial races in California, Connecticut, Illinois, Oregon, New Mexico, and Florida, helping elect Democratic candidates in the first four, and Republicans in the last two. Once the dust settled, Latino voters emerged as the wild card that numerous polls miscalculated (see Latino Decisions and Nate Silver on this), increasing their share of the vote in several states and helping Democrats retain their majority in the Senate.
