Wealth Gap Widens for Latinos

The wealth gap between latinos and whites has widened to unprecedented levels amid the housing crisis and the recession, according to an analysis of newly available 2009 government data by the Pew Research Center, an independent think tank. The median net worth of white households is twenty times greater than that of black households and 18 times greater than that of latino households, according to the study.

The study, which used data collected by the Census Bureau, found that the median wealth of latino households fell by 66 percent from 2005 to 2009. By contrast, the median wealth of whites fell by just 16 percent over the same period. Black Americans saw their wealth drop by 53 percent. The median wealth of latino and black households is at its lowest point since 1984, when the Census Bureau first conducted the study, the report said. Read the entire study here.

Robinson Cano 5th Dominican to win HR Derby

Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees became the fifth Dominican to win Major League Baseball's All-Star Home Run Derby joining Sammy Sosa (2000), Miguel Tejada (2004), Vladimir Guerrero (2007) and David Ortiz (2010). Cano's father, former major leaguer Jose Cano pitched to his son and helped him win the event.

Robinson hit 12 home runs in the final round to beat Adrian Gonzalez of the Boston Red Sox. Robinson drilled the winning shot over the fence in right-center field, lifted his arms in the air, and found his father, wrapping him in a bear hug in a touching moment.

"When he called me at home, that he wanted me to come to the United States because he's going to be in the Home Run Derby, I said, 'I'll be happy to pitch to you,' because that's what I do at home," Jose Cano said. Robinson Cano also became the third Yankee to win the Home Run Derby, after Tino Martinez in Cleveland in 1997 and Jason Giambi in Milwaukee in 2002.

“The best thing is not my swing, it’s the gentleman that was throwing B.P., my dad,” said Robinson. “I want to tell him he’s one of the best fathers, thank him for the support and making me who I am today.”

Legalizing young immigrants would strengthen U.S.

Like millions of others, I came to America with my immigrant parents. Seizing on the opportunities and access to superior education offered by this country allowed me to not only achieve the American Dream, but to give back to this nation.

My story is far from unique. Like the immigrants before me, I came to the United States to seek the freedom and the opportunities unavailable in the country of my birth. Comprised of a vast immigrant population, the United States matured and expanded as a result of the great Irish and Chinese immigrations of the 1800s along with many newcomers from Europe over the years. These immigrants provided much of the labor force that built the infrastructure as our country grew into a world power. Over the years, my family and millions of other immigrants worked hard to make America into a strong, productive, and dynamic nation.

Today, tens of thousands of young adults stand ready to give back to the country they call home.

As media and pundits continue to dissect the results of November's midterm election, one clear theme has emerged: Latinos in 2010 affirmed their influential role in American politics, as voters and as candidates, and this will only be magnified in the 2012 election. And while 2010 showed that political leaders and parties that demonize or take Latino voters for granted are taking a great risk, this election also showed that effective outreach to the Hispanic electorate continues to be spotty, both in terms of actual contact and in candidates defining themselves on the issues that matter.

Let's recap. Latino voters proved pivotal in several contested races, more notably in U.S. Senate contests in Nevada, Colorado, California, and Washington. They also made their mark in gubernatorial races in California, Connecticut, Illinois, Oregon, New Mexico, and Florida, helping elect Democratic candidates in the first four, and Republicans in the last two. Once the dust settled, Latino voters emerged as the wild card that numerous polls miscalculated (see Latino Decisions and Nate Silver on this), increasing their share of the vote in several states and helping Democrats retain their majority in the Senate.

Old and new blood shared the Latin Grammy stage Thursday night with newcomers Mario Domm and his Mexican pop group Camila and veteran merengue superstar Juan Luis Guerra taking home three awards each. The trio Camila scored Record and Song of the Year and Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group for their second CD, "Dejarte de Amar." "Three Grammys in one night," an obviously moved Domm, the group's lead singer, said on his third trip to the stage. "Many years, many empty pages, many phrases that are in a drawer and suddenly one has the luck to reach your hearts."

Guerra's three wins, including Album of the Year, bring his total Latin Grammys to 12. The Dominican singer opened the three-hour show on Univision from Las Vegas with "Lola's Mambo," a duet with trumpeter Chris Botti, from his winner CD, "A son de Guerra. "'A son de Guerra' is an album with romantic characteristics but also social," Guerra said as he fetched his third award. "I think the time has come for us to call things like they are ... and also to reclaim better justice, more honesty and more integrity for the people of Latin American, so this is for a better Latin America."

Results Show Latino Republicans Don't Have a Latino Constituency

The Tea Party Republican electoral triumph resulted in changing the Latino political map. With the exception of Henry Bonilla, a Republican elected to Congress from San Antonio in 1999, it had been almost a century since Latino Republicans had won major contests in states other than Florida. In 2010, they elected two Congressmen in Texas, one in Washington and Idaho and governors in New Mexico and Nevada.

Additionally, they continued to win major contests in Florida. They elected Mel Martinez to the U.S. Senator in 2004. He resigned in 2009, and in 2010 Marcos Rubio was elected to fill Martinez's seat. Latino TPRs also retained control of three Congressional seats, which Cuban Republicans consider their fief. In total, there will be 7 Latino TPRs in Congress and one in the Senate in the 112th Congress.

Republicans have long asserted that Latinos are Republicans, they just don’t know it. Their claim is based on the assumption that Latino cultural values such as strong Christian beliefs and family ties translate into support for the Republican political agenda. Beginning with the Bush campaign of 2000, the Republican Party has pursued the Latino vote. Their efforts yielded little more than a substantial increase in the support Texas Latinos gave President Bush in 2004. Even there, however, he received only 40 percent of the Latino vote.

The United States still faces a significant gap in residential broadband use that breaks down along incomes, education levels and other socio-economic factors, even as subscriptions among American households overall grew sevenfold between 2001 and 2009.

What's more, even when controlling for key socio-economic characteristics, the U.S. continues to confront a racial gap in residential broadband use, with non-Hispanic white Americans and Asian-Americans more likely to go online using a high-speed connection than African-Americans and Hispanics.

Those are some of the key conclusions of a new analysis of Census data released Monday by the Commerce Department. It found that the percentage of households that connect to the Internet using broadband grew to 63.5 percent in 2009 from 9.2 percent in 2001, reflecting increases across nearly all demographics.

Hispanic Candidates Win Big

WASHINGTON

Hispanic candidates emerged as winners after last week's elections, lifting the number of Hispanic members of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate to record levels.

There will be five new GOP Hispanic members of the House - two from Texas, Bill Flores of Bryan and Francisco Canseco of San Antonio; Jaime Herrera of Camas, Wash., the first Latina to represent Washington state; Raul Labrador from the Idaho district that includes Boise; and David Rivera of the Miami area. In addition, Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban refugees and a tea party-backed Republican, will be a new U.S. senator from Florida.

In all, there will be at least 26 Hispanic members in the upcoming Congress: 17 Democrats, seven Republicans and two U.S. senators.

With the mid-term elections upon us, and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and roughly one third of the 100-member senate being contested, it is clear that Latino voters may help decide many tight and contentious political races. Obama Pledges to "Not Walk Away" from Immigration Reform

President Obama pledged this past week to not "walk away" from immigration reform during a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Obama has often said he would move to advance an immigration bill and immigrant rights advocates were hoping for passage of comprehensive immigration reform by Congress. However, this hopefulness for immigration reform during the Obama administration has waned after how little progress the White House had made on the issue.

The president admitted his administration's inability to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill during his time in office, and said that Republicans who'd previously backed immigration reform had now backed off. Obama has said passing any kind of reform would be not be possible without GOP support.

While speaking at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus annual awards dinner in Washington, the president stated. “I know that many of you campaigned hard for me, and understandably you’re frustrated we haven’t been able to move this over the finish line, but let me be clear: I will not walk away from this fight.” Immigration reform is an important issue to many Latinos, who voted in large numbers for President Obama. Obama also urged Latinos not to punish Democrats at the polls because he's been unable to keep his promise to sign a comprehensive immigration bill into law.
